Catalytic pyrolysis of mixed plastic wastes using commercial grade kaolin and Ukpor clay from Nigeria

The aim of this study is to convert mixed plastic waste into usable liquid fuel via pyrolysis technique using Ukpor clay as a low-cost catalyst and commercial grade kaolin. Waste was catalytically degraded in laboratory scale semi-batch reactor at temperature 400 °C, residence time 45 min, heating rate 16 ˚C/min. catalysts were characterized by XRF analysis while proximate the feed carried out gave volatile materials content 95.17 wt%, fixed carbon 1.51 wt% ash 2.6 wt%. kaolin employed catalytic same feedstock for catalyst-to-plastic ratio 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 operating parameters. Optimum yields obtained 1:3 both with yield 85.80, 3.58, 10.62 89.80, 6.33, 3.87 liquid, gaseous, solid products, respectively. products cracking optimum conditions their suitability fuel. properties determined density, viscosity, flash point, pour calorific value. results suggest that produced whose are comparable conventional fuels (gasoline diesel oil) process producing higher yield. GC-MS found most oil high aromatic some aliphatic other hydrocarbon compounds, FTIR product from also shows it contains hydrocarbons different functional groups such aromatics, olefins, carbonyl, amines, sulphides, hydroxyl.
